Google releases a tool for testing freight transfers between trucks

Google Research described MilleMiglia on September 18. The open-source tool generates synthetic freight networks for the middle mile, when shipments travel between distribution centers.

Researchers can use it to test algorithms against vehicle schedules, sorting limits and transfers between trucks. Google published the code and says the generated data can also support machine-learning research.

MilleMiglia is a research tool, not proof that a carrier cut costs or shortened delivery times. Independent researchers still need to compare Google's generated data with working freight networks.

Researchers can inspect the code and test different methods on the same problems. Freight operators would have more reason to use the benchmark if those results also hold up against real schedules and missed connections.
