Maryland governor seeks a 72-hour deadline for reporting serious AI incidents

Governor Wes Moore announced an AI framework on September 22. He directed Maryland's AI Subcabinet to recommend legislation requiring companies to report serious incidents within 72 hours.

The framework also calls for safety tests, independent audits and whistleblower protections. Moore plans to work with state employee unions on job changes and retraining.

Moore asked lawmakers to consider a 72-hour reporting deadline, but Maryland has not enacted one. The proposed protections for schools and children also remain unfinished.

Any draft law will need to define a serious incident and identify which companies must report one. State workers also need clear consultation rules before agencies use AI to change their jobs.
