Anthropic says Claude found an enzyme system with an unknown function

Anthropic says Claude identified an unusual enzyme system in viruses that infect bacteria. The company calls it ART, short for array-associated reverse transcriptases.

Human scientists performed the laboratory work. Anthropic says the search used about 950 agents over 21 hours.

The company has not established what the system does or whether it has a practical use. Decrypt also reports that its function remains unknown. Researchers have not shown that it can work as a treatment or gene-editing tool.

Independent experiments need to show what the system does and whether other teams can reproduce the finding.
