Claude completed a physics calculation with known methods

Physicist Matt von Hippel described Claude Science's work in a September 25 guest post for Anthropic. He wrote that Claude completed a nine-loop calculation for a six-particle scattering formula in a simplified theoretical model.

Von Hippel says physicist Lance Dixon checked the result. He estimates that either method Claude used would cost a customer roughly $1,000 to $2,000.

Anthropic hosted von Hippel's account of useful computational work. The result did not establish a new law of nature. Von Hippel says human researchers had independently made substantial progress, and Claude used known methods.

The planned scientific paper should explain the methods and checks. Independent researchers can then test how much of the result they can reproduce.
