President Donald Trump and leaders from Google, Anthropic, Meta, OpenAI, xAI and Nvidia signed a voluntary AI safety accord on September 29. Trump posted the document after the group met at the White House.
The pact asks each company to set internal controls for developing and deploying models. The controls cover cybersecurity and biological and chemical risks. An internal team would check the controls, then an independent external auditor would review them.
Each company would also form an independent board committee. The committee would receive reports and ensure the company addresses any problems. The companies agreed to meet regularly to discuss standards and practices.
The commitments are voluntary. The published accord sets no penalties or enforcement mechanism. It also does not say who will choose the auditors or what standards they will use. The accord says these steps could later become law or regulation.
Outside auditors would test each company's safety controls. Board committees would oversee how companies fix any problems. The pact will matter only if the audits use meaningful standards and the companies act on the findings.
Watch who chooses the auditors, what they test and whether the companies publish their findings.
