OpenAI starts text watermarking, with a restricted detector

OpenAI says API customers can choose text watermarking for selected models. It plans to add watermarks to eligible ChatGPT and Codex output in the EU over the coming weeks. Detector access initially requires approval.

The company says edits can weaken detection. A watermark does not prove a claim is true or identify the user. A missed watermark does not prove human authorship. Using it as a verdict on a student or writer would go beyond what the tool can establish.

Watch which models receive support and whether outside researchers reproduce detection results on edited text.
