Anthropic sets November 12 for rules on autonomous physical actions

Anthropic published an updated Usage Policy on October 8, effective November 12. The policy adds requirements for connected hardware that can cause injury. A qualified operator must be able to observe and stop the equipment. If Claude disconnects, the equipment must stay in a safe state.

These are company use restrictions, not a new law or a guarantee that a robot is safe. Anthropic says many other changes clarify existing rules. High-risk decisions still require a qualified human reviewer and disclosure that AI was used.

Hardware operators need to compare their actual stop controls and disconnection behavior with the policy before its effective date.
