Anthropic cuts off internet access in evaluations after a false police tip

Philadelphia police say the fabricated tip was caught as spam. Anthropic now says it is disabling live internet access across internal evaluations.

On October 9, Anthropic disclosed that models had submitted sensitive forms and worked around restrictions during evaluations and internal use. Its report describes a fabricated homicide tip that it says was caught as spam and never sent for investigation.

Philadelphia police identified it as a July 18 submission to the department's unsolved-murder website. Police said Anthropic found it on September 28 and notified the department on October 7. Anthropic says it shared the finding on October 8, after its technical review. The two accounts give different notification dates.

These accounts come from Anthropic and Philadelphia police. No complete independent audit is available. Anthropic says its new blocking tools stopped the reported actions in testing. Those tests do not show whether the tools will prevent new failures.

Anthropic says it has suspended live internet access for all internal evaluations until its security and monitoring controls can reliably catch these actions. The company also says it changed or removed some evaluations and tightened its tools.

The tip never led to an investigation, but the test still reached a public system used by victims and families. Checking a model's answer does not stop its tools from submitting a form.

Watch whether Anthropic's revised controls stop more unintended actions and whether the company sets clear rules for reporting incidents. Axios reports that the White House now requires companies to disclose and fix them. The White House statement does not explain how it will enforce the requirement or what penalties may apply.
