New analysis puts US chip imports at nearly $90.5 billion
Yahoo Finance analyzed official trade figures on October 10. It found that US semiconductor imports reached nearly $90.5 billion from January through August 2026. That was up from $49.2 billion during the same period in 2025. Officials released the underlying August trade figures on October 6.

Yahoo Finance connects the increase to spending on AI infrastructure. But the figures cover all semiconductor trade, so they do not measure AI demand alone. They also do not show that every imported chip went to a data center.
Watch whether US chip production grows fast enough to meet demand. Later trade figures may also show whether AI-related purchases can be separated from other uses.
