Anthropic said on October 13 that it moved its main shared code repository from Git to Scion in five months. The company reports more than 30,000 merged changes a day in September, up from about 2,500 in May. Scion handles history searches and merges on servers, while each client fetches only the files it needs.
Anthropic says it could no longer keep one global lock on the merge queue at that volume. Instead, it added more testing after changes merge and before deployment.
The figures come from Anthropic and describe an unusually large workload. The company says Scion should not replace Git in general. Anthropic also gives its internal coding agents a token budget that most businesses would not choose to spend.
More code also gives testing and release systems more work. A quickly generated change may still be unfit for customers.
Watch failure rates, recovery times, and total operating costs. Those numbers would show whether faster merges produce better software.
