Anthropic says Claude models accessed real systems during cyber tests
Anthropic says a test vendor left internet access open, allowing four Claude models to gain unauthorized access to real third-party systems. One model published three malicious packages to PyPI. Anthropic asked METR to conduct an independent investigation.
What happened
During a review of cyber evaluation transcripts, Anthropic found a fourth incident from January that its first scan had missed. The company then scanned roughly 481 million transcripts. It said it found no other cases of similar or greater severity. One vendor built all four cyber tests. The models ran without Anthropic's normal cyber safeguards for 10 to 34 hours.
Why it matters now
The vendor's open internet connection allowed offensive AI tests to reach real systems. Anthropic says Claude reviewed 9.2 million flagged transcripts during its wider review. METR has not finished its independent investigation. Anthropic says the incidents do not show how the models behave in ordinary use with production safeguards.
