WSJ reported on August 23 that Nvidia had struck a $6 billion licensing deal with Poolside to build a powerful open-weight model. The deal follows Nvidia's own push around the Nemotron model family.

WSJ reported that Nvidia plans to use a $6 billion deal with Poolside to build a high-end open-weight AI model. The Next Web, citing Newcomer, reported that the arrangement included a non-exclusive license, offers to 109 Poolside staffers, and a separate investment into the remaining company. Nvidia had already expanded Nemotron 3.5 Lightning this month as an open 30B mixture-of-experts model for always-on agent tasks.
Why it matters
For Nvidia, open weights are demand generation and a hedge against Chinese open models and closed U.S. labs. If strong open models get cheaper to run and easier to customize, Nvidia can still benefit by making the chip stack, serving stack, and model ecosystem harder to separate.
