The Wall Street Journal reported on October 11 that Amazon was in talks to buy Decart for around $7 billion. Reuters also reported the talks. Amazon declined to comment outside business hours, and Decart did not respond. The talks could still fall apart, and another bidder could emerge.
Decart makes software that runs AI on different types of hardware. The company also builds models for live video and simulated worlds. Decart says it raised $300 million in May in a round led by Radical Ventures. That brought its total funding above $450 million.
Amazon and Decart are still in reported talks. They have not announced a purchase. The deal terms remain unknown, including whether Decart's software would keep supporting rival hardware. Decart's product descriptions remain company claims.
A cloud company can sell customers access to chips while owning the software that runs on them. Buying Decart could give Amazon more control over how customers run AI. The reported price does not show that customers would save money or get better performance.
The first sign will be an agreement announced by Amazon and Decart. Its terms would need to show who owns Decart, which customers can use its software, and whether the software will still support rival hardware. Until then, there is no completed purchase to assess.
