US reportedly restores British institute's access to unreleased AI models

The Telegraph reported on October 11 that the US administration had reversed course. The paper said the administration had asked developers not to share new models with Britain's AI Security Institute. Reuters says the reported change now lets American developers share models before release. The White House, OpenAI, and Anthropic did not immediately respond to Reuters.

The reported change would let developers share models with the institute, but it would not require them to share anything. AISI says it does not certify models as safe or decide whether companies release them.

Yandex shuts down Vladimir data center after drone damage

Yandex said drone damage shut down its Vladimir data center on October 11, Reuters reported. Some services became unavailable. Later that day, Reuters cited a RIA report that Yandex was gradually restoring access, though some functions were still unavailable.

Restoring Yandex services does not show that the damaged data center is back online. Reuters based both reports on company statements, and those statements did not describe the equipment losses.

IMF chief says AI investment is helping keep growth near 3%

In Bangkok on October 12, IMF chief Kristalina Georgieva said spending on AI infrastructure was helping keep global growth near 3%. Reuters reports that she estimated AI could add 0.5 to 1 percentage point to growth in advanced Asian economies. She estimated that emerging Asian economies could gain 0.2 to 0.8 percentage point.

Georgieva's ranges estimate how much AI could add to growth. They are not total growth rates or measured gains caused by AI. Spending more on infrastructure also does not show that the finished systems will earn enough to cover their cost.

Maine's university AI rollout draws new scrutiny

Reports published on October 11 examined the University of Maine System's rollout of ChatGPT Edu. The Press Herald says more than 3,700 people had signed up by October 8. Maine Public quotes finance official Ryan Low, who said the service costs about $22 per user each year. The university announced the two-year agreement in May, and access began on July 1.

Account sign-ups do not show how people use ChatGPT Edu in class or whether students learn more. The new reports raise concerns that professors may use AI to generate feedback. The contract gives people access, but the university says each person decides whether to use it and how.
