Maine's university AI rollout draws new scrutiny
Reports published on October 11 examined the University of Maine System's rollout of ChatGPT Edu. The Press Herald says more than 3,700 people had signed up by October 8. Maine Public quotes finance official Ryan Low, who said the service costs about $22 per user each year. The university announced the two-year agreement in May, and access began on July 1.

Account sign-ups do not show how people use ChatGPT Edu in class or whether students learn more. The new reports raise concerns that professors may use AI to generate feedback. The contract gives people access, but the university says each person decides whether to use it and how.
Course rules would show whether professors and students have to disclose their use of AI. Evidence about student learning would show whether the accounts help. Lower-cost access does not settle how teachers should use ChatGPT Edu.
