California will require human review of some automated workplace discipline starting in July 2027

Governor Gavin Newsom signed SB 947 on September 30. The law bars employers from relying solely on an automated decision system to fire or discipline a worker. The provisions become operative July 1, 2027.

An employer cannot base a decision on an output if a person cannot corroborate it or finds that it is inaccurate, incomplete or misleading. The law exempts qualifying collective bargaining agreements and some aviation or defense uses required by federal law. These provisions are not yet operative.

Anthropic estimates robots cost less than human labor for just 0.3% of work

Anthropic published a study of robot exposure on September 30. The company estimates that current robots can perform tasks covering 34% of U.S. working time in at least some settings. Most of those tasks require controlled environments.

These numbers come from company research. They do not measure job losses or predict that 34% of jobs will disappear. A robot that completes a task in one factory may fail in another workplace. Costs, physical skills, regulation and people's preferences can still limit adoption.

DeepMind tests watermarks for AI-designed proteins, but researchers can remove them

Google DeepMind introduced SynthID Bio on September 30 and published a paper in Nature. Its methods add identifying marks to AI-designed protein sequences or structures. In lab tests with binders for three target proteins, the watermarked versions bound about as well as the unwatermarked controls.

The study tests whether researchers can trace where a protein came from. It does not show that screening systems use the marks today or that the marks prevent biological harm. Structural relaxation destroyed the structural watermark, and redesign can remove the sequence marks. Alphabet funded the study, and every author works for the company.

AI oversight needs evidence other people can check

The FTC can demand records that show how models behave. Starting July 1, 2027, California's new employment law will require a person to check an automated decision against supporting information. Both measures give another person evidence to examine. A broad safety promise does not. Research faces the same test. A robot may complete a task in one workplace but cost too much in another. A protein watermark may identify where a design came from in a test, then disappear when someone changes the protein.
